Evanston Made is excited to work with building owners, SSAs, the City of Evanston, and our member artists to activate commercial storefronts with art!
Now more than ever, artists need our civic engagement and support, as the creative industries are some of the hardest hit during Covid. Concurrently, businesses are closing, leaving storefronts in commercial areas vacant, which can cause blight and property damage. Evanston Made will carry out our mission to connect Evanston artists to the public by expanding the Art Under Glass program throughout the city.
Below is a list of the participating artists by location, with information on how to purchase work. We encourage you to Collect Evanston Art and post photos of the windows on social media using #evanstonmade

“Black Girl Magic,” a textile abecedarium exhibit by Evanston artist Melissa Blount, that celebrates contemporary Black women.
“Black Girl Magic” features 26 textile pieces, one for each letter of the alphabet, celebrating contemporary Black women. The piece explores the relegation of many Black women to domestic servitude.
After slave shackles were dropped in 1865, Black girls became millionaires, started churches, birthed movements, and ran for President of the United States. Black girls were not meant to survive after the centuries-old practice of brutal enslavement, but they did.
Black Girl Magic, Blount says, is here to stay and will not be left out of historical or contemporary conversations.

Metal sculpting has been an addiction for me ever since I first picked up a welding gun when I was 17 in a metal sculpture class. The longevity and strength of metal coupled with the method of joinery was attractive to me from the very start.
I’ve always been into building toy models, legos, things out of wood, and doing other handyman work for some cash on the side, but working with metal topped everything.
The summer of 2020 presented me with a unique opportunity to invest in myself and do something I’ve been striving for ever since I lost access when I graduated high school.
Now I’m developing my own style and unique design methods inside my parents’ garage. I see infinite possibilities in metal, and I hope to one day inspire others as opposed to right now where I’m merely the one being inspired by other masters of the art.
Professional Study
Like many high schoolers I did not know what I wanted to do professionally, but metal sculpting made me realize that I belong working in the built environment of this world. I’ve developed this life goal of leaving my permanent mark on the surface of this planet. This is what led me to architecture. Architectural studies took my raw desire to create and is molding me into a more efficient and thorough designer. My education has already improved my communication skills as a designer and I feel confident working with people to make them the perfect piece of metal. My work as an amateur metal artist has me more excited than ever to get back to school and push myself as a creator.

I use multiple mediums of acrylic, charcoal, pastel, and collage to create abstract shapes and forms that depict variations of depth and space. By using these abstract shapes and forms, along with line and color, I challenge myself to create original and provoking compositions. These works displayed were created during the peak of quarantine in April, where I began experimenting more with collage and incorporating other ideas/works of mine that exist outside of painting. My recent work has ventured into studies of everyday objects, consumer products, graffiti, and personal sketches. I am thrilled to be able to share just a glimpse of my work for the public eye in downtown Evanston.

Work from the “Natural Series” (nfs)
The Natural Series is based on The Weaving Mill’s (Chicago, Illinois) W.A.R.P 2020 Remote Residency. The purpose of this series is to create a dialogue between the recycled cotton that was provided by The Weaving Mill, cotton that is used in everyday materials (denim, q-tips, cotton balls, etc), bast fibers (flax, hemp, etc), and cellulose fibers. In this series I was able to hand-spin materials that I had never worked with before and with doing that I realized we should be utilizing other materials other than cotton, due to its durability (flax and hemp are one of my favorites). Each weaving was woven on a 13” x 13” wide-notch cardboard loom.

We all need some sunshine in our lives, especially now during these turbulent times. My painting, “The Ties That Bind,” is about the strength we need as a society to keep ourselves safe from Covid-19. The hands are tied to represent our efforts to self-quarantine, wear masks, and take other preventative measures. The lily growing above them signifies hope: we will be a healthier and safer society if we practice willpower, and make smart choices.

About the Artist
Shellie Argeanton is a mixed media artist who believes in the healing power of art therapy. She finds it restorative and calming to make art for self-care and emotional reflection. Shellie uses found images to create abstract floral works and graffiti style portraits. Her stylistic lines and mark making have been the main thread in her work over the years.
