Gwen Masterton
From childhood, I have loved playing dress up and creating eclectic looks. I’ve always particularly enjoyed altering thrifted clothing, but so frequently “upcycling” means taking clothing for larger bodies and creating something for a smaller body. As my own body changed over time, I asked myself: how can we upcycle small clothing, or items that are truly no longer needed, into something suited for larger bodies or bodies in the process of change?
I started exploring using recycled clothing to create wearable art that is unique, comfortable, and adjustable to changing bodies. Much of my work so far has been with men’s ties. Growing up, my dad was required to wear a suit and tie to work every day, and my mother often bought fun, unique ties for him. Sadly, he never wore the ties she chose– the mandate for conformity was too strong.
Decades later, my (retired) dad lives in tie dyed sweats, the business suit has retreated from workplace ubiquity, and ties have largely become relics of a more restrictive time. I love turning these neglected scraps of patriarchy into fun, funky accessories for free spirits of all genders!
