Nature in all its forms is inspiring. From collecting specimens for a detailed botanical drawing or looking at a path for a loose interpretation in pastel has made me more observant of the world around me. I still enjoy doing a simple graphite sketch in my sketchbook or a more formal drawing of a seed pod or following a flower from earliest bud to latest wilted flower. I have now begun to focus on using the pure rich colors of soft pastels. And rather than work on a specimen in isolation or using a photo at my desk, I have begun to paint more landscapes in plein air.
