Amber Matthews

Working primarily with clay, I combine human figures with animal forms to explore themes of transition, adaptation, balance, and perspective. Capturing transient moments, my figures appear vulnerable, awkward, even bizarre, but I hope they are also approachable.

I think of my work as story-telling, and like many story-tellers, I find animals relatable and appealing protagonists, less intimidating and direct than human subjects. The stories I tell are inspired by my own responses to changes in my life and in the world around me.

I enjoy creating minute textures and details, whether on the surface of clay or on paper or canvas, and I strive for an element of realism in my fantastical forms.
