Perspective Gallery Presents: “In Their Gardens of Good and Evil”

October 30 @ 12:00 pm - November 20 @ 5:00 pm

The significance of seven, a number with mystical and emblematic power, makes for a powerful photo exhibition in Perspective Galleries November show.

Featuring the work of gallery member artists Katsy Johnson and Susan Isaacson In Their Gardens of Good and Evil will be on display from Oct. 30th – November 20th, with an opening reception Saturday, November 1st from 5 to 7 p.m. The artists will also give a virtual talk on Thursday, November 20th at 7 p.m.

Shaped by the artists’ personal traditions and perspectives, the dual exhibition includes Isaacson’s The Seventh Year and Johnson’s Evil Flowers.

Isaacson’s The Seventh Year takes inspiration from the Jewish tradition of seventh year sabbaticals for the land: a time of rest, renewal, and regeneration when farmers are instructed to leave their fields fallow and to celebrate and surrender to what nature yields. This ancient practice led Isaacson to reflect on her own relationship with the earth. Her work explores the belief that all living things are connected and that humans are not separate from the natural world we inhabit. The notion of oneness offers comfort as she contemplates life’s fragility and transience.

In striking contrast, Johnson’s Evil Flowers is a modern take on floral representations of the Seven Deadly Sins. Johnson transforms botanical arrangements into dark meditations on human vice. Drawing on classical still-life traditions, her photographs pair lush bouquets with unsettling modern intrusions—cell phones, doll products, even live animals—to reveal how ancient sins continue to bloom in contemporary life.

Together, these two bodies of work invite viewers into a “garden” where nature becomes both sanctuary and snare, reflecting our capacity for renewal as well as our ongoing struggle with temptation.
