All the artists in this exhibition are students of Jill Sutton. Most of us have taken in-person oil painting classes with Jill at the Evanston Art Center, but the core members of the group showing here began to cohere in Jill’s online EAC Zoom class that met regularly during Covid. Since our beginnings in 2020—our first group show was hung at the Evanston Art Center in February 2022—additional artists have contributed to, and benefited from, our “conversations in paint.”
In our weekly Zoom calls, “Oil Painting Discussion and Critique,” the conversation is broad. Whoever has questions about work in progress uploads photos to a shared file and presents them to the group. We critique one another’s work—and we talk about our specific ideas, big questions, and all the meandering in between. We discuss technicalities and process; we share other artists and ideas inspiring us. We welcome newcomers. We delight in casual in-person critiques when we can see “for real” the works we’ve collectively watched come to life on screen.
All art sold directly benefits OTR’s Resident Service Program.
