Janice Fleckman
I am a Clinical Social Worker and have a certificate in Applied Arts and Psychology. I have been painting and making art for over 30 years. I received a 2004 Individual Cultural Fund Grant from the City of Evanston and the Illinois Arts Council for a project “Honoring Our Lost Mothers and Others: Connecting and Reconnecting. As part of the project I developed and held classes using art expression to express grief. It culminated in a public exhibition of my art and participants art at Open Studio Project, Inc. The grant and opportunity informed my art moving forward.
I listen to people’s stories and tell their stories through my paintings. These stories are reflections of my own and people’s experience living through trauma, the pandemic, political or personal upheaval, grief, wars and other challenges. By layering a photo screen print with acrylic paint and transfer, I evoke many layers of experience, feeling and emotion to potentially connect the viewer to their own challenges and triumphs.
