Deborah Hirshfield

I began to batik silk in 1970. I was initially interested in learning serigraphy, but when I arrived at the initial class at the old Evanston Art Center in Harley Clarke, the class had been canceled and Japanese batik substituted. It clicked with me, and proceeds from my work paid for my stay in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, where I became an assistant in the fiber department of the Instituto del Arte. I subsequently taught in recreation venues in the Chicago area.

I attended Mundelein College and Columbia College in Chicago, majoring in Art and Music and minoring in Education. I taught for twenty years in Chicago Public Schools. On retirement, I took up another fiber art, Shibori, which I utilize in my current work, which is both feminist and political.
