Cyanotype Workshop with Beth Adler
June 22 @ 11:30 am - 2:30 pm
$75Join Hive Center for the Book Arts on Saturday, June 22 from 11:30-2:30 for a cyanotype workshop with Beth Herman Adler.
In this 3 hour workshop, participants will learn about the materials and process for making a cyanotype image on paper.
This is a basic class and no experience or special skills are needed. The history of this historic alternative photographic process will be discussed and a variety of finished examples will be shown.
Each participant will make their own cyanotypes to take home. Participants will leave with 2-4 unique pieces as well as a handout and a list of materials so they can further explore this process on their own.
All materials are provided, and in the event of rain, the workshop will take place on another date (TBD).
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Beth Herman Adler attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She worked as a graphic designer for over 25 years, designing books, banners, and posters for clients that included the Chicago Symphony and National Geographic.
Ms. Adler rediscovered printmaking after taking a summer course at OxBow School of Art in Michigan. Working with a press just felt right and a year later she purchased her own etching press. In addition, she has worked extensively with cyanotype.
Adler’s love affair with cyanotypes began in 2021, when she was a resident artist at the Lakeside in in Lakeside Michigan. With no press to work with, she turned to the sun and cyanotype printing to make her images. Since then she has pushed the limit of this alternative photographic process, creating a rich variety of unique works.
Her work can be found in the collections of Northwestern University and the Field Museum as well as in many homes and commercial spaces. She has been featured in Luxe Interiors magazine and has appeared on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight. She is represented by Gallery 1871 in Chicago.
